Based upon the book of Philemon, the story involves Onesimus, a runaway slave who finds sanctuary with Paul at a time when Paul lives in Rome under house arrest awaiting trial before the most vicious ruler of all, Emperor Nero. Onesimus’ master, Philemon, a recent convert to Christianity, has informed Paul that despite his new religious convictions, he expects Onesimus returned immediately. Paul’s landmark solution to the question of slavery is portrayed as a portrait of a man far ahead of his time.
