Do You Know Your Left From Your Right?

Originally published: November 16, 2007

If I hear one more time how intolerant people are on the right…Maybe you haven’t been reading the newspapers:  Today’s intolerance is coming from the left, not the right.  Sad when a person doesn’t know their left from their right.

The left loves to throw around phrases such as Pro-Choice. But are they Pro-Choice in letting each State with its respective democracy decide for themselves about abortion or do they want activist judges making those decisions for us?  Are they in favor of choice when it comes to the issue of school vouchers so that parents can choose whether or not to send their children to a public or private school?

The left claims that people should tolerate homosexuality, but do they tolerate those who sincerely believe homosexuality is an immoral act?  Or do they instead support the California legislation which makes it against the law for teachers and other public officials to speak adversely about homosexuality and the current House of Representatives bill which makes it against the law for people to not hire homosexuals?

As if that isn’t bad enough laws under the guise of Hate Crime Legislation and Fairness Doctrine are trying to control the airwaves so that Talk Radio, one of the few alternatives to the liberal media is silenced and put out of business for good.

Of course the “tolerance” of the left is not always demonstrated through legislation.  Sometimes they simply shout people down such as conservative speakers who dare to offer an alternate point of view at today’s universities, that bastion of free exchange and intellectual debate.

Or maybe the “tolerance” is accomplished by condescending words.  Those who want to teach Intelligent Design in the class room are reminded of the dark, bleak time in our history when Evolution wasn’t allowed and so now, well…Intelligent Design shouldn’t be allowed.  And if you think it should be, you’re “polluting our national dialogue” to quote the words of outspoken atheist Brian Flemming.

And the words just keep on coming:  If you believe illegal immigrants shouldn’t be given a driver’s license, you’re a racist.   If you believe kindergarteners shouldn’t be taught about sexual preference, you’re a homophobe.  If you believe female college professors should be fired for teaching that ALL men are rapists, you’re a chauvinist. If you believe murderers should be executed, you’re uncompassionate.  But if you believe smoking should not be against the law, you’re irresponsible.

Yeah, the right sure has gotten extreme.  We need to return to that good old, fashioned, common sense, moderate, tolerant view of today’s liberals.
