Boycotting Girl Scout Cookies? What’s Next?

Originally published March 02, 2008

Have you heard the latest?  National Action against Obesity has called for a boycott of Girl Scout Cookies. Evidently it is wrong for a high profile, non-profit, public service organization to be contributing to our national health crisis.

Speaking as just one person, I try to watch my weight and I haven’t had a good fattening cookie in a long time but now I am determined to buy a box or two of the famous chocolate mint.
Is nothing sacred? Now a kid can’t even sell a stupid cookie?  What are they supposed to sell instead? Watercress sandwiches? Tofu Surprise?

What’s next?  Should children discontinue lemonade stands unless they are government regulated with forty percent of the profits from each glass going into the kid’s Social Security Tax?

And when’s the last time we checked on Barbie dolls?  Isn’t it about time the Mattel Company acted more responsibly by having Barbie sue Ken for sexual harassment?

Oh…How did I forget Bubble Gum? The Bazooka Joe comic strip in the gum wrapper should be replaced with a word or two about tolerance. Maybe throw in the word sensitivity at the same time.

Will we ever again just let kids be kids?  Not so long as we are allowing idiots to be idiots.
