Can Children Be Confused By Attending Different Denominations?

QUESTION:

My nephew was attending a Luther school and now that he is entering high school.  He will be attending Cathedral in the North County.  When he goes to church with his family on Sundays they attend a non denominational church.  Won’t he be confused on what denomination of Christian he is?  His parents want the best education but that means different schools.

ANSWER:

I believe it is important for parents to stress the name Christian, rather than any particular denomination. If your nephew is going to more than one church, this could help to model the idea that Christians worship in a variety of ways in a variety of churches, but the important beliefs  (the identity and salvation of Jesus) are shared by all. I.E. Help kids understand that denominations are not a sign of diversity but rather unity in diversity.
