“Bob, Can you think of any verses that would allude to
an “age of accountability” besides where Jesus states that “the children’s
angels do always behold the face of the Father” and David going to his
child that had died? Please let me know. Thanks.”
Putting aside the blatantly obvious observation that sending a baby to Hell does not seem to be the action of a loving God, many Christians believe there is such a thing as the “age of accountability.” Although that exact term is not found in scripture, here are some verses about children not knowing good from evil and it is implied that God does not hold children responsible for what they do not know.
And the little ones that you said would be taken captive, your
children who do not yet know good from bad–they will enter the land (Deut 1:39).
But before the boy knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the
right, the land of the two kings you dread will be laid waste (Isa 7:16-17).
See also, Matthew 12, which contains a description of the only sin for which Jesus did not die. This sin is a conscious and final refusal to serve Christ. Since Christ makes Himself known today through His Spirit, the sin is appropriately titled “Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.” It is understandable that one will have honest historical doubts about the person of Jesus, but ignoring the experience of God’s drawing Spirit is quite another matter.
When Christ, by the Spirit’s power, performed a miracle in front of certain Pharisees, they were left without an excuse to admit his true identity. Christ’s credibility had been clearly established. Not wanting to “knuckle under,” the Pharisees quickly attributed the Holy Spirit’s work to the power of Satan. This lie is the blasphemy. A more modern person might try to write the Spirit’s influence off as some kind of weird repressive thought, etc.
It is easy to see why a sinful man does not wish to repent, but is it conceivable that a baby who has not even obtained a sense of right and wrong could possibly commit this sin? Of course not.
This is Bob Siegel, making the obvious, obvious.
